I haven't had an eye test prior to starting these meds and there has been no mention of one in the future. After the first week I did get some side effects of sore eyes so I stopped taking it. I was diagnosed with RA two years ago and started on MTX.

Retinal toxicity of Plaquenil may manifest itself with subtle disturbances of the retinal pigment epithelium which may eventually lead to complete destruction of the macula in the form of bull’s-eye maculopathy. Plaquenil can prove toxic to the retina, threatening the vision. Regular eye examinations are essential for those patients taking plaquenil because over time the retina can become damaged beyond repair. Regular medical monitoring is the only way to ensure that toxicity is not occurring. What can Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil do to my eyes? Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil was originally used to treat malaria and is now used mostly to treat rheumatological and dermatological diseases. Its most frequent use now is for Rheumatoid Arthritis RA and Lupus and is often very effective in mitigating the joint and arthritic symptoms. I started taking Plaquenil 2/2009 by 8/2009 I was noticing changes in my vision. Thing were going dim but the eye doctor kept telling me there was no toxicity. By 2/2010 things were so dim I could not see to shop in stores. I quit taking Plaquenil but the DR still said no toxicity. My eyes continued to get worst. The vision problems Plaquenil can cause are extremely rare, can be reversed if you catch it fast enough, and take many years to develop. Easiest way to deal with it is an eye exam every 6 months where they dilate your eyes and one a year where they do a visual fields exam.
